Lady Devils host pre-season volleyball Jamboree

The Mathews High School varsity volleyball team has been hard at work preparing for the 2016 season, with the squad hoping for a return to the state tournament.

Mathews hosted a five-team Jamboree on Saturday. Visiting teams included Lafayette, Warwick, Menchville and Woodside high schools. Each of the five teams played two sets against every other team.

Mathews won five of the eight sets it played. Head coach Pat Moughon was able to utilize all of her players and try out various lineups. Mathews hosted New Kent on Tuesday evening for another scrimmage match. The teams played five sets, with Mathews coming out on top in three of the five.

Recapping Saturday’s events, Moughon said the team had some “moments of really good and some moments of not so good. We have to improve our consistency and get our energy up.” The varsity squad consists of 16 players this season—12 are returning from last year and four are new for 2016.
