The Mathews High School varsity girls’ volleyball team is hitting its mid-season stride with wins over Northern Neck opponents Essex and Lancaster. Additionally, the team went to Virginia Beach on Saturday to beat all opponents to win the Gold Division at the Endless Summer Tournament.
Last Thursday, the Lady Devils went head to head with the Essex Trojans. The MHS girls didn’t know what to expect, but ended up sweeping the Trojans in three straight sets, by scores of 25-13, 25-11 and 25-19.
All of the Devils received playing time in this match, with everyone being a contributor to the win. Team leaders were Rachel Close with nine digs, Lindsay Crigler with 21 assists, Maddie McCann with eight kills and five digs, Mackenzie Moughon with 11 kills, five digs, and three aces, and Casey Parrish with 10 kills, five digs and five aces.
