Lady Devils head into regional tournament

The Mathews High School girls’ basketball team is heading into post-season play. The fifth-seeded Lady Devils will host the 12th seed Washington and Lee Eagles at 6 o’clock Friday in the opening round of the Class 1 Region A tournament.

The girls’ Friday game will be the start of a regional tournament doubleheader at MHS, with the Mathews boys taking on Middlesex in the nightcap.

The Lady Devils finished the regular season strong, with a 46-14 win over King and Queen on Tuesday, Feb. 6. This game allowed the substitute players to get some playing time and give the starters a rest. In the first half, the Devils outscored King and Queen by 21 points, 30-9.

The second-half offense was weaker, but the defense stayed consistent. The Devils outscored King and Queen every quarter, which resulted in the 46-14 victory, which put the team’s regular season record at 12-9.
