Lady Devils hand Raiders first loss

 

The Mathews High School varsity girls’ basketball team defeated the previously unbeaten Rappahannock Raiders last Thursday night, 42-38, a good way for Tommy Eriksen’s Lady Devils to close the book on 2014.

Taylor South was the top scorer for Mathews, ending the night with 17 points. Maria Spadaccini added seven points while Savanna Wooten chipped in six. Kai McCann, Kirsten Beatley, Madison Owens and Madison South also contributed to the Lady Devils scoring.

With the win, Mathews improved its record to 6-2. JV Devils

The Lady Devils’ junior varsity counterparts also had a successful night against Rappahannock, crushing the visiting Raiders, 35-9. Hallie Duncan was the only Mathews player to score in double digits, leading the team with 11 points. Emily Carmine added six points. Sarah Brown, Yolanda Fells, Kate Respess, Jade Davis and Alexis Wells also scored points in the win, which improved the JV team’s record to 8-0.
