Lady Devils go 2-0 in tournament; now 5-0 on season

The Mathews High School varsity softball team added a pair of wins on Saturday at a tournament in Lancaster to improve to 5-0 on the season.

The Lady Devils began the wet, cold afternoon with a contest against the tournament host, Lancaster. MHS easily defeated the Red Devils by a score of 16-1.

Madisyn Jackson threw the complete five-inning game, allowing no hits while surrendering four walks and striking out 10 batters. Jackson also led the Devils at the plate going 3-for-3 with two singles, a double, an RBI, and three runs scored. Lexie Miles went 3-for-4 with four RBIs, all of which came on a grand slam in the first inning. Madison South and Josey Bauby were each 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Emily Sorey was 2-for-4.

The second opponent for the Blue Devils was the Northumberland Indians, a team Mathews defeated the week prior in a come-from-behind win, scoring three runs in the team’s final at-bat to win, 4-3. Saturday’s game was a close one this time as well, at least...
