Lady Devils fall to Raiders in volleyball season opener

The Mathews High School varsity volleyball team opened its season on Tuesday night playing host to the visiting Rappahannock Raiders. The Lady Devils fell three sets to none, by scores of 25-21, 25-7 and 25-12.

While nerves may have gotten the best of the Lady Devils this time around, they will look to redeem themselves this coming Tuesday when they travel to Montross to take on the Washington and Lee Eagles. The MHS girls’ next home game will be on Thursday, Sept. 5, against Northumberland.

In the season opener, Kristen Frank, Grace Bandurco and Aleya McCurry contributed one ace apiece. Bandurco led the team in assists with seven, while McCurry and Frank followed with four and one, respectively. Joice Small had a team-leading four kills, while Katelynn Blake, McCurry and Jada Ashberry each had two. Lois Beale and Meghan Pruitt each had one kill. Frank dominated defensively with 24 digs.
