Lady Devils fall to Raiders in tennis, 8-1

Last Wednesday, the Lady Blue Devils traveled to Rappahannock Community College’s Warsaw campus to face the tough 1A Rappahannock Raiders. Mathews lost to the Raiders by a score of 8-1.

Seeded at number one in singles, Maddie Brown scored Mathews the Lady Devils’ only win of the day against Connor Pemberton. After spotting her opponent the first game of the match, Brown used drop shots and lots of topspin lobs and the wind to her advantage and frustrated Pemberton. Brown won by a match score of 8-2. At number two, Madelyn Johnson played long and hard against her opponent, Katelin Brann. Johnson put up a good fight; however, she lost, 8-4.

Third-seeded player Chloe Sanderson played against a very quick and consistent Carlie Pemberton; however, Sanderson lost, 8-1. At number four, Sarah Brown was up early 3-2, then struggled and lost to Laura Ambrose by a score of 8-3.
