Lady Devils fall to Raiders in regionals

The Mathews High School varsity girls’ basketball season came to an end on Friday in the quarterfinals of the Class 1 Region A tournament, as the Lady Devils fell to the Rappahannock Raiders, 51-24.

Mathews and Rappahannock had split the regular season series one game apiece, so the Lady Devils knew this was going to be a hard-fought game.

Coming out of the gates, Mathews played strong and aggressive defense allowing only nine points in the first quarter but still trailed, 9-6. In the second quarter the Lady Devils played carelessly on both sides of the ball getting outscored, 20-4, putting them in a 29-10 hole at the half.

Mathews tightened up on the defense in the second half, but still ended up losing by 27 points.

The Lady Devils had a successful season with a slightly better than .500 winning percentage.
