Lady Devils fall to Islanders, beat K&Q

The Mathews High School varsity girls’ basketball team split a pair of games this past week, losing to Poquoson, 29-28, last Wednesday on the final buzzer and beating King and Queen for the second time this season on Tuesday, 39-31.

The whole game against the Islanders was back and forth, with the two teams trading the lead. Mathews found itself down as play expired.

Abbie Hudgins led the team with 10 points. Joice Small followed close behind with eight, while Stacie Thomas scored seven points and Zayle Darby scored three.

The MHS junior varsity girls, meanwhile, easily defeated Poquoson, 33-16.

King and Queen

On Tuesday, Mathews faced off against King and Queen in a varsity-only contest. The MHS girls started out slow, expecting the game to be easy and fell behind in the first quarter.
