Lady Devils fall to Chargers in regional play

The Mathews High School varsity girls’ volleyball season came to an end last Wednesday in the semifinal round of the Region 1A tournament, with the Lady Devils falling to top-seeded Middlesex by straight sets.

The Chargers then claimed the regional title with a win over Rappahannock, earning the right to represent Region A in the state tournament, which began Tuesday.

To make it to the regional semifinals, the #5 seed Lady Devils defeated #4 seed Northampton by straights sets in the opening round on April 12.

Northampton

Mathews traveled to the Eastern Shore on April 12 to face the Yellow Jackets, winning by scores of 25-16, 25-10 and 25-19. Outstanding honorable mentions from the match include Connie Johnson and Joice Small each with five aces, Aleya McCurry with 15 assists, Emily West with 14 digs, and Small with nine kills and four solo blocks.


Middlesex

Two days later, Mathews lost to the Chargers by scores of 25-12, 25-18 and 25-8. Outstanding honorable mentions from the match include Grace Bandurco and Small each with one ace, Bandurco with eight assists, McCurry with four kills, West with 13 digs, Small with one solo block, and both Small and Sarah Ashbaugh with an assisted block. The Lady Devils said their farewells to their graduating seniors—Bandurco, Johnson, and McCurry.

While the Lady Devils’ season may have ended in a loss, coach Pat Moughon said she is proud of her girls for pushing themselves to finish strong and with a fight. Moughon is looking forward to kick starting her next season with the Lady Devils this fall as the traditional sports schedule is expected to return.
