Lady Devils fall to Bruton, 5-4

The Mathews High School varsity tennis team traveled to Bruton High School last Thursday. The Lady Devils fell to the Class 2A Panthers by a 5-4 margin but didn’t go down without a fight.

At number one singles, Avery Betz used her topspin shots but fell short to Bruton’s Alexa Woolson with a 6-0, 6-1 score. At number two singles, Caroline Evans fought hard for a 6-3, 6-1 win over Cathryn Horned by using her consistent shots. Connie Johnson, number three, defeated Ashley Baldwin with her aggressive shots, 6-0, 6-4. 

At number five, Alex Mills won against A.J. Miller by forfeit due to an ankle injury. At the time of the injury, Mills was winning, 5-0, in the first set. Caroline Bray fought hard but lost to Bruton’s Ariel Moore, 6-2, 6-1. At number six, Kylie Berry fell to Laura Rilee, 6-1, 6-1.
