Lady Devils fall to Altavista in regional quarterfinals

The season came to an end for the Mathews High School varsity girls’ basketball team Tuesday evening when it suffered a 40-22 loss to the visiting Altavista Colonels in a regional quarterfinal game.

The contest was a close one for much of the evening with MHS trailing by four points after the first period (11-7) and the game tied at 17, at the half. The Lady Devils fought through the third period but their shots just were not falling.

Even so, they trailed by only five points at the completion of the third quarter, 22-27. The fourth and final period was not a good one for the Lady Devils; they were outscored, 13-0, as Altavista sealed the victory. Maria Spadaccini and Hallie Duncan each scored eight points for Mathews. Savanna Wooten added four points and Harley Haydon rounded out the scoring with two.
