Lady Devils fall short of Conference 42 title

The Mathews High School varsity girls’ basketball team fell just short of the Conference 42 title Friday night as they were defeated by the Cumberland Dukes by a score of 42-40.

The Lady Devils were scheduled to play in the first round of the Region 1A East tournament last night. Mathews, the #5 seed, traveled to #4 Riverheads for the regional quarterfinals. The winner of that game advances to the semifinals Friday night at Cumberland High School and also earns a berth into the state tournament at Virginia High School in Bristol next week.

In Friday’s conference championship game, Mathews never trailed the entire first half, although the contest was a very close one. The score was tied at 17 with five minutes left in the half and again at 25 with nine seconds left in the half. Kirsten Beatley then quickly took the ball down the length of the court and sunk an outside jump shot to take a 27-25 lead into halftime.
