Lady Devils fall one win shy of state berth

The Mathews High School girls’ varsity basketball team’s season came to an end last Wednesday at Riverheads High School. The Devils fell to the Gladiators by a score of 57-30, ending the season one game shy of a state tournament berth. 

The contest was tied at 9-9 midway through the first quarter.  However, excellent Gladiator defense kept the Devils from scoring a single basket for the remainder of the period. Riverheads went on a 15-1 run and the first period ended with the Devils trailing, 24-10.

Mathews never recovered and trailed the rest of the game. “Overall (I’m) proud of the way our season turned out after losing a lot of points and rebounds to graduation seniors last year,” head coach Tommy Eriksen said.
