Lady Devils fall in district tournament

The Mathews High School girls’ varsity basketball team fell in Monday’s Tidewater District tournament game against the top-seeded West Point Pointers, 51-13.

In spite of the loss, the MHS girls will advance to the Class 1 Region A tournament, which begins Friday. Mathews will travel to Warsaw to face the Rappahannock Raiders in a 6 p.m. contest.

The Lady Devils knew they had a tough battle on their hands in Monday’s contest against the homestanding Pointers, as West Point won the series, 2-0, during the regular season.

During the first quarter, the Pointers came out strong on offense, scoring 18 points. The Devils played weak on both sides of the ball. Mathews scored only seven first-quarter points, adding another three by halftime to trail, 37-10.
