Lady Devils extend win streak to four games

The Mathews High School varsity girls’ basketball team is hitting its stride. Last week, the Lady Devils posted wins over West Point and King William to extend its win streak to four consecutive games.

The girls played host to West Point on Friday. Mathews came back from trailing by seven at halftime to defeat the Pointers, 54-48.

After the half, the Devils found a way to score off the Pointers’ man defense, putting up 36 points to only 15 for West Point. Mathews took the lead early in the fourth quarter and maintained the edge by the final buzzer.

Yolanda Fells led the Devils with 16 points, followed by Stacie Thomas with 15, Ellie Armistead with 13, Katarina Parent with four, Hannah Robins with three, Abbie Hudgins with two, and Jade Davis with a single point.

On Dec. 12, the Lady Devils led throughout the contest to beat the King William Cavaliers, 61-49. Only three points for Mathews came from the foul line; the remainder came from inside and outside the paint. Armi...
