Lady Devils earn first win

In the final game heading into spring break, the Mathews High School varsity softball team earned its first season win, defeating the Northumberland Indians on the road last Thursday, 5-2.

The win provided the Lady Devils with a bit of revenge; in the first matchup between these two teams earlier this season, the Indians beat Mathews, 8-2.

In last week’s contest, Justice Parlett pitched all seven innings for Mathews, striking out three Indian batters. Defensively, Mathews allowed 10 hits and committed three errors.

Mathews batters also picked up 10 hits of their own, led by Abbie Hudgins, who went 3-for-4. Ellie Armistead went 2-for-4 at the plate, while Caroline Crittenden, Andie Schlosshan, Hannah Robins, Madisyn Jackson and Victoria Bing each added one hit. The Devils scored one run in top of the fifth inning and four more runs in the top of the seventh. They held the Indians from scoring until the bottom of the seventh inning.
