Lady Devils defeat York; JV girls remain unbeaten

The Mathews High School varsity girls’ basketball team returned from the Christmas break in strong fashion, defeating AA opponent York High School 42-38 last Thursday night. The Lady Devils dropped games to Charles City and West Point.

MHS traveled Jan. 3 to York High School to face the Lady Falcons. Trailing 22-20 at the half, Mathews took the lead in the fourth quarter and maintained a four-point margin until the final buzzer.

Leading the team was Shelby Ware with 10 points. Taylor South followed with nine, while Taylor Denton added seven and Kai McCann contributed six points. Also scoring were Whitney Eriksen (five points), Shanice Williams (three points) and Emily Brown (two points).

The Lady Devils found themselves on the opposite end the following night at Charles City, losing to the Panthers, 28-26. Down early in the game, 11-3, Mathews fought to come back but never recovered.
