Lady Devils defeat Raiders, Indians

The Mathews High School varsity softball team lost its season opener to Essex on March 17, then posted wins over Rappahannock and Northumberland for a 2-1 record.

Returning from 2014 are seniors Kelly Adams, Bailey Kujawski, Madison Owens, Taylor South and Hunter Thomas, and sophomores Keely Crittenden, Lexie Miles and Madison South.

New to the team are sophomores Josey Bauby, Kirsten Beatley, Casey Dalton, Amber Jackson and Emily Sorey and freshman Andie Schlosshan. Julie Hudnall returns for her second season as the Lady Devils’ head coach, assisted by Karen Townsend and Debbie Smith.

Mathews began its season at home against Essex last Tuesday. Unable to generate much offense, the Lady Devils lost 4-1 by the visiting Trojans. MHS produced three hits, one single each by Beatley, Crittenden and Kujawski. Adams pitched the entire game for Mathews, allowing four earned runs while striking out one Essex batter and walking none.
