Lady Devils crush Lancaster, 31-3, in opener

The Mathews High School varsity softball team opened the 2016 on a strong note, routing the Lancaster Red Devils on Tuesday night at the Dream Fields sports complex, 31-3.

Mathews has eight players returning from last season—juniors Josey Bauby, Kirsten Beatley, Keely Crittenden, Casey Dalton, Lexie Miles, Emily Sorey and Madison South, and one sophomore, Andie Schlosshan. Senior Savanna Wooten has returned to the team after taking off last season and senior Kaylynn Heimerich is new to the varsity squad this year.

Rounding out the roster are freshmen Victoria Bing, Caroline Crittenden and Madisyn Jackson. In Tuesday’s season opening win, Mathews players posted 24 hits and batted .545 as a team. Heimerich and South each went 1-for-1 with a single and a double, respectively. Schlosshan and Miles were each 3-for-4 with four RBIs. Wooten was 4-for-6 with three RBIs.
