Lady Devils claim Conference 42 title

The Mathews High School varsity softball team posted a couple of shutout victories last week to claim the Conference 42 title.

The Lady Devils were scheduled to host Luray yesterday in the Region 1A East quarterfinals. The winner of that game will play the Rappahannock Raiders today, with the regional championship game on Friday.

Last Wednesday, MHS had no problem defeating Cumberland. The Devils gathered 12 hits and nine walks at the plate to bat .462 as a team. Couple that with four Cumberland fielding errors and Mathews scores four runs in the first inning, 15 in the second, and one in the third to win the contest by a score of 20-0.

Andie Schlosshan was two-for-two at the plate while Keely Crittenden, Caroline Crittenden and Lexie Miles were each two-for-three. Madison South pitched the entire five-inning game, earning the shutout victory. She walked only one batter and allowed only one hit (a pop fly that was lost in the sun) as she struck out 10 batters.
