Lady Devils blank Tigers, 39-0

The Mathews High School varsity girls’ basketball team improved to 8-3 on the season with conference wins over King and Queen and Charles City this past week. 

Friday’s contest at King and Queen was a unique one as the Tigers failed to sink a single shot. After a strong defensive effort, the Lady Devils helped head coach Tommy Eriksen receive his first shutout victory by a score of 39-0. Contributing to the scoreboard total were Ellie Armistead with 12, Harley Haydon with eight, Yolanda Fells with six, Kirsten Beatley with five, Hannah Robins with four, and Sarah Brown and Kate Respress both adding two.  

After a slow start at Charles City Tuesday, the Devils managed to come away with another large margin victory. After trailing by a point after the first period, Mathews found its rhythm and had pulled away to an eight-point lead at the half, 26-18. MHS continued to surge ahead, controlling the second half and winning by a score of 69-38.
