Lady Devils beat Raiders, 1-0

The Mathews High School varsity softball team hosted Rappahannock last Wednesday. The Lady Devils fell short against the Raiders in their first meeting early in the season, losing 7-6 in a game that included 19 hits and 3 home runs.

The story was a little different this time around as the contest remained scoreless after six innings. Mathews eventually prevailed with a walk-off run in the bottom of the seventh, 1-0.

Rappahannock had the bases loaded with one out in the top of the fourth, but Mathews got out of that jam. The Lady Devils scattered three hits and a pair of walks throughout the first six innings, but never had more than two girls on base.

In the top of the seventh, Mathews retired Rappahannock batters in order. Emily Sorey led off the bottom of the inning with a single to left. Casey Dalton laid down a sacrifice bunt, advancing Sorey to second. Kirsten Beatley followed with a walk before the second out was recorded on a pop-up. An infield single by Keely Crittenden load...
