Lady Devils beat Pointers in district championship, take first regional game

The Mathews High School girls’ varsity basketball team is just one win away from a trip to the state tournament, after beating West Point for the Tidewater District tournament title on Friday and easily defeating Arcadia in the opening round of the Region A tournament.

Post-season play began last Wednesday, as the Lady Devils advanced with a 50-38 win over #3 seed Middlesex in the opening round of the district tournament.

It was a closely fought battle from the start, with the lead changing hands several times, Mathews went into the locker room up 23-20, but the Chargers stormed back to a 30-28 lead at the end of three quarters. Mathews took charge of the rest of the game to win by 12 points at the final buzzer.

Senior Sharese Jarvis was the top scorer with 17 points, followed by Mackenzie Moughon and Lindsay Collins with 13 points each and Maggie Scribe with seven points. The win set up the fourth meeting between Mathews and West Point this season.
