Lady Devils beat Pointers in 39-37 thriller

The Mathews High School varsity girls’ basketball team picked up a pair of victories this past week, easily defeating the visiting Franklin Lady Broncos, 50-25, in the Lady Devils’ home opener and pulling out a 39-37 squeaker on Tuesday at West Point.

It came down to the wire on Tuesday night as Mathews overcame the Pointers by two points, 39-37. “I’m extremely proud of the way this team kept battling all night,” head coach C.K. Ambrose said. “We start off slow scoring and we gave up several points in transition. We were down by 10 at one point.

“The girls in the huddle kept saying, ‘We’re not losing this game, we’re going to get this.’ That made my night hearing them say that and then I just had that feeling that we were going to get this win,” Ambrose said. “This was a big step for us and it showed the girls this we’re not out of any game, as long we play hard every minute. We have a few things to clean up, but I definitely like where this team is headed.”
