The Mathews High School varsity softball team added a pair of easy wins over the last week to improve to its overall season record to 6-3.
Mathews traveled to Lancaster Friday night and returned home with a 15-0 victory. Kelly Adams and Madison Owens combined in the circle for a one-hit shutout. Adams struck out four and gave up no walks or hits in two innings of work. Owens pitched the remaining three, striking out nine and allowing one hit and a walk.
Leading the team at the plate were Adams who was 2-for-2 with two singles and two RBIs and Emily Sorey who was 1-for-1 with a single, one RBI, and a walk. Owens, Taylor South and Lexie Miles were each 2-for-4; Hunter Thomas, Madison South and Amber Jackson were each 1-for-2.
On Tuesday, Mathews defeated the visiting West Point Pointers, 25-2, in another five-inning game. Adams and Owens again shared pitching duties and combined to hold West Point to two hits and no earned runs.
