Lady Devils beat Indians in five-set nailbiter

It may have been just the season opener, but Tuesday night’s match had all the intensity of a playoff championship game as the Mathews High School varsity volleyball team posted a stunning five-set victory over Northumberland.

Playing in front of an enthusiastic home crowd in the MHS gymnasium, the Lady Devils came from behind more than once to defeat the visiting Indians, last season’s Region 1A East runners-up and a state tournament semifinalist.

In a contest that may eventually have regional playoff implications, Mathews dropped the first set, 25-21. The Lady Devils rallied to win the next two sets by scores of 25-19 and 27-25.

Northumberland still had plenty of fight left, coming out strong to control the tempo in the fourth set, winning by a 25-16 margin and forcing a fifth and final set.
