Lady Devils beat Indians, 54-27, in season opener

The Mathews High School girls’ basketball team kicked off its 2018-2019 with a 54-27 win on Monday against the Northumberland Indians. The Lady Devils also had a couple strong showings in a pair of pre-season scrimmage games.

Mathews traveled to Northumberland High School for Monday’s regular season opener and had little trouble with the homestanding Indians. Mathews held Northumberland scoreless in the first quarter, while amassing a 20-point lead. The Devils kept up the strong offense by penetrating the zone defense and by moving the ball around effectively. The Devils also favored the ball on offense by snatching lots of rebounds.

The Devils were up by 25 during the fourth quarter, 50-25. They continued to pressure on defense and cause havoc on offense to win the game by a 27-point margin.
