Lady Devils beat Cumberland twice, advance in volleyball regionals

The Mathews High School varsity volleyball team captured the Conference 42 title last Thursday on the road facing the Dukes of Cumberland County, and topped Cumberland again on Tuesday in the first round of regional play.

The Lady Devils won the championship match last Thursday in straight sets. After taking the first set rather easily, 25-14, MHS had to fight hard for the remainder of the night. Cumberland was very scrappy and never gave up, amazingly finding a way to return the ball back over the net most of the final two sets. Mathews continued to fight hard and won the second set, 25-21, and the third, 25-22, to take the match and the championship.

Mariah Robinson and Hallie Duncan led the team in kills with 8 each. Brittany Mitchem and Anne Stewart each had 7 kills while Belle Massimino had 5. Keely Crittenden led in digs with 18, Josey Bauby followed with 15, Robinson with 12, and Massimino with 10. Madison South added 34 assists. Duncan had 3 solo blocks and Stewart had 1.
