Lady Devils beat Chargers, fall to Cavs

The Mathews High School varsity softball team had a thrilling come-from-behind win Friday in the first round of the Tidewater District tournament, defeating the visiting Middlesex Chargers, 12-11.

The Lady Devils didn’t fare as well in Monday’s tournament championship, falling on the road to the King William Cavaliers, 10-0.

In spite of the loss, the MHS girls’ season continued yesterday with the Blue Devils hosting the Lancaster Red Devils in the Region 1A quarterfinals.

In Friday’s district tournament game, the Lady Devils found themselves in the hole at the start as the Chargers scored four innings in the top of the first inning. Middlesex held that lead up until the top of the fourth inning, when Mathews was able to tie the game, giving them some momentum to keep pushing.
