Lady Devils at 5-3 headed into Christmas break

The Mathews High School varsity girls’ basketball team holds a 5-3 record heading into the Christmas break. In recent action, the MHS girls beat Essex and Middlesex and fell to King William and West Point.

Friday the 13th proved to be unlucky for the Lady Devils, as they lost on the road to the King William Cavaliers, 41-26. Connie Johnson and Stacie Thomas led the team in scoring with nine points each, followed by Hannah Robins with three, Joice Small and Abbie Hudgins with two each, Zayle Darby with one point from the foul line.

On Tuesday, Dec. 17, the girls hosted West Point, falling to the Pointers by five points, 28-23. Hudgins was the top scorer for Mathews with six points. Small and Robins each added five, Johnson scored three, and Darby scored one point.

Mathews finally got back in the win column the following night at home against Essex, beating the Trojans by 20 points, 57-37. Abbie Hudgins posted her all-time high with 27 points to lead the Devils. Johnson also fi...
