Lady Devils are just 1 win away from state tourney

The undefeated Mathews High School volleyball team is one win away from a return visit to the VHSL state tournament following wins over King William, Middlesex and Northumberland.

After completing a perfect 17-0 regular season, the defending Class 1 state champions defeated King William and Middlesex last week on the way to capturing the Tidewater District tournament title, and beat Northumberland on Tuesday in the quarterfinals of the Region A tournament. The Devils won all three contests by straight-set victories.

Mathews hosts the Washington and Lee Eagles at 6 o’clock tonight in the regional semifinals. The winner will face the winner of the other regional semifinal match (Middlesex or West Point) on Tuesday. Tonight’s winner also earns a berth in the state tournament, which begins next Saturday, Nov. 10.

King William

  Mathews hosted King William last Wednesday night for the district semifinals, 25-9, 25-10 and 25-22.
