Lady Devils advance to state semifinal game

It’s back to Virginia Commonwealth University for the members of the Mathews High School volleyball team.

The Lady Devils, defending Group A, Division 2 state champions, earned a spot in the state semifinals after defeating Goochland in Tuesday’s quarterfinal match, beating the visiting Bulldogs in three straight sets, by scores of 25-17, 25-21 and 25-16.

Mathews will face the Region D champions from Gate City at 4:30 p.m. Friday at VCU’s Siegel Center in Richmond, with the winner advancing to play for the state title on Saturday afternoon.

The MHS girls also defeated Northumberland last Thursday, also in straight sets (25-14, 25-1 and 25-1), to reclaim the Region A title.

Last Thursday’s match with Northumberland was the third time the Devils and Indians have played this year, and the Devils made sure it was no different than either of the previous matches.
