Lady Devils advance to regional championship

The Mathews High School varsity girls’ basketball team will be playing for the regional championship on Friday night after totally demolishing the Northumberland Indians on Tuesday by a 76-11 margin.

“I’m extremely proud of the way the team is playing,” head coach C.K. Ambrose said after the impressive win. “For the last five games the girls have been playing tough. The last five games we’ve outscored our opponents by an average score of 61-29. I keep telling the girls to play every game like it’s their last and they’re doing just that. They’re leaving everything out there on the court and I couldn’t be more proud of them.”

Mathews will face the winner of Wednesday night’s West Point-Rappahannock game to determine the Class 1 Region A champion. Whether the Lady Devils draw the Pointers or Raiders, Ambrose said, “there’s no doubt the girls will be ready.”
