Lady Devils advance to regional championship game

Mathews High School’s undefeated volleyball team moved a step closer to returning to VCU’s Siegel Center for another shot at the VHSL championship, as the Lady Devils recaptured the Tidewater District title and posted a regional semifinal win over Windsor.

Last Thursday, the Mathews girls defeated Middlesex to take the district tournament crown. After losing the first set, 19-25, to the motivated Chargers, the Lady Devils picked up the slack and took the next three sets by scores of 25-17, 25-9 and 25-19.

Mackenzie Moughon led the Devils in kills with 17, followed by Maddie McCann (15), Teeny Robbins (five) and Kacie Austin (four). Shelby Ware ended the night with 37 assists. Rachel Close led the team in digs with 20, followed by McCann with 16, Moughon with 13, Austin with eight, and Robbins with four.
