After crushing Charles City, 24-1, in Tuesday’s opening round, the Mathews High School varsity softball team will host Middlesex tonight in the Conference 42 championships. Regardless of the outcome, both teams have already earned berths in the Region 1A East tournament.
The Lady Devils’ regular season came to an end last Wednesday at Hanover High School. Mathews fell to the host Hawks, a 4A school, by an 8-0 margin. With the loss, the Devils ended the season with an 11-6 record.
Kelly Adams pitched the first four and a third innings and Madison South came in to pitch the remaining one and two thirds innings for Mathews against Hanover. Offensively, the Lady Devils only had three hits, singles by Hunter Thomas, Madison Owens and Josey Bauby.
It was a different story on Tuesday night against Charles City, as Mathews racked up 15 hits to bat .469 as a team. Amber Jackson and Andie Schlosshan were each 1-for-1; Jackson with a single and Schlosshan with a double, a walk and RBI. Lexie Miles and Taylor South were each 2-for-3. Miles had a double, a triple, walk and four RBIs, and T. South had two singles and three RBIs. M. South and Casey Dalton were each 1-for-2. Keely Crittenden was 3-for-5 and Thomas was 2-for-5. Bailey Kujawski and Bauby each added a hit.
Once again, Madison South and Adams shared pitching duties, combining on a no-hitter. South pitched the first three and Adams the final two. South struck out four and gave up only two walks while Adams struck out five while walking one.
Tonight’s conference championship begins at 5 o’clock at MHS. Regional play begins Monday.
