Lady Devils advance in Conference 42 tourney

Following straight-set victories last week over Gloucester and King and Queen, the Mathews High School varsity volleyball team ended the regular season with a 20-3-1 record. On Monday, the Lady Devils knocked off Carver Academy in the opening round of the Conference 42 tournament.

The top-seeded Devils were scheduled to face West Point last night in the tournament semifinals. If Mathews wins, the Lady Devils will host the Conference 42 championship at 5 o’clock tonight.

Last Wednesday, the Devils traveled to Gloucester where they struggled with nine serve, 22 kill and 10 dig errors. Mathews was, however, able to defeat the Dukes in straight sets, 25-20, 25-15 and 25-21. On the positive side, MHS had 27 kills.

Victoria Bing led the pack with 10 kills, followed by Hallie Duncan with five, Caroline Crittenden with four, Josey Bauby and Madisyn Jackson with two each, and Anne Stewart, Madison South, Ashley Shackelford, and Tori Hicks with one apiece. Leading in digs was Keely Crit...
