K&Q upsets MHS girls in regional tournament

The Mathews High School girls’ basketball season came to an abrupt end Tuesday night after the Lady Devils were upset in the opening round of the Region 1A tournament, falling to the King and Queen Tigers, 52-48.

Mathews (13-6) had gone into the playoffs as the region’s #3 seed, hosting the sixth-seeded Tigers (7-9). Senior Joice Small, who was named District Player of the Year, was the top scorer with 22 of the Devils’ 48 points. Small was also selected first-team All-District, along with junior Reese Brock, who scored eight points in Tuesday’s season finale. Junior Sarah Ashbaugh, who received second-team All-District honors, also ended the night with eight points. Senior Olivia Coons scored seven points, with sophomore Trinity Reynolds (two points) and junior Kayla Carr (one point) rounded out the scoring.
