The Mathews Museum has become the permanent home of maritime explorer Gilbert Klingel’s 3,000-pound, large yellow Aquascope. Decades after its original feature in the National Geographic magazine and after years residing at the Calvert Marine Museum in Maryland, this two-man submersible has returned to Mathews County. It was constructed and used by Gilbert Klingel, naturalist, author and boatbuilder. He was a resident of Mathews County at the time of his death in 1983, first visiting the county in the 1950s and purchasing property here in 1963, starting the Gwynn’s Island Boat Yard. The Aquascope came to the Mathews Museum last year after many years of being at the Calvert Maritime Museum in Maryland. An exhibit built around the Aquascope in partnership with the Virginia Institute of Marine Science is set to open Saturday, Aug. 29, following a members’ private reception on Thursday, Aug. 27.
