Kleinfelter, Shackleford pitch Deltas past River Dogs

Matt Kleinfelter led a trio of pitchers that stifled the Richmond River Dogs offense, as the Deltaville Deltas cruised to a 7-2 victory on Saturday night.

The Deltas jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning on back-to-back RBI hits from Lukas Miller and Jett Bristow.

Richmond scored a run on account of a Deltas’ fielding error in the top of the third inning, but Alexander Crittenden drove in Jacob Houston in the bottom half to push the lead to 4-1.

The Deltas played two more runs in the fifth and another in the sixth to stretch their advantage to 7-1. The River Dogs managed a run in the 9th due to an error, but the Deltaville lead was never threatened.

Kleinfelter made his first start of the season and lasted six solid innings, striking out 10 while allowing just three hits. Austin Shackleford struck out four over two innings of hitless relief, and Nash Withers closed the final inning with a strikeout.

Last week’s away game in Richmond was postponed because of rain.

The Deltas return to action for a pair of home games this weekend. There will be Friday Night Lights at Deltaville Ballpark this week, as the Deltas host the Richmond Misfits. On Saturday, league rival Richmond El Heaters return to Deltaville. Both games begin at 7:30 p.m.
