Kitchen fire

Members of the Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad responded to the 8700 block of Guinea Road Friday just before 6 p.m. with a report of smoke showing from a residence. According to AVFRS spokesperson Herb Austin, the cause of the fire was cooking oil on the stove. Austin said the fire spread from the kitchen into the dining area and also into the attic above the kitchen. Heat and smoke damage occurred throughout the home. Firefighters were again dispatched to the residence around midnight Saturday because the fire rekindled in the attic. Austin said 17 AVFR firefighters responded with four trucks along with 11 volunteers from Gloucester Volunteer Fire and Rescue and a pumper truck.
