King Day services to be held virtually

For the second year in a row, due to the pandemic, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day services in Gloucester and Mathews will be held virtually, with the Mathews NAACP holding its on Sunday afternoon and the Gloucester Union Relief of Missionary Baptist on Monday afternoon, both held on the Zoom platform.

Author Shawn A. Cosby will be the guest speaker at the Mathews NAACP event, which begins at 3 p.m. The theme of this year’s program is “Dare to Dream.”

A Mathews High School graduate and current resident of Gloucester, Cosby is the award-winning author of novels “Razorblade Tears,” “Blacktop Wasteland,” “My Darkest Prayer” and several short stories. His books are set in Southeastern Virginia. Mathews and Gloucester residents will recognize many street names and landmarks referenced in his novels.
