King Day services to be held locally

Observances will be held on Sunday in Mathews and Monday in Gloucester to reflect on the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the work that remains to be done in the field of civil rights.

The Mathews branch of the NAACP will host that county’s King Day observance at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Wayland Baptist Church, Beaverlett. The Rev. Joshua A. Harris, pastor-elect of First Baptist Church, Mathews, will be the guest speaker. The MGM Tri-County Choir will present musical selections.

Gloucester’s Martin Luther King Jr. service will be held at 4 p.m. Monday at the First United Baptist Church, Route 17, south of Gloucester Court House. Gloucester Union Relief Association of Missionary Baptist is hosting the event, which will feature local historian Dr. Dorothy Cooke as guest speaker. The MGM Tri-County Choir, under the direction of John Smith, will perform.
