King Day services to be held in Mathews, Gloucester

Celebrations will be held on Sunday and Monday in Mathews and Gloucester to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

The Mathews NAACP will hold its ceremony at 3 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church, Mathews, while the Gloucester Union Relief Association will hold its program at 4 p.m. Monday at the First United Baptist Church in Gloucester.

The theme of the Mathews service is “Dare to Dream.” The Rev. Jonathan Waldon, pastor of First Baptist Church, will speak. Music will be provided by Ebenezer Baptist Church, Cobbs Creek.

A Hampton native and 2010 Bethel High School graduate, Waldon has been active in ministry since a very young age. He has served in the following ministries: ushering at the doors of the church, stepping in a step ministry and teaching for various events such as Bible study, Sunday school and Vacation Bible School.
