KENNETH ROBERTS

Kenneth Roberts, 90, of Hayes, passed away at his home July 8, 2016.

He was born May 14, 1926 in Liverpool, England, to Florence and Stanley Roberts. Kenneth served in the British Royal Navy from August 1943 until January 1947. He was a radio operator training at The Marconi College in Aberdeen, Scotland, and also served on minesweepers. He never lost his love of the sea and the people who served with him. In 1947 he returned to his training as a Pipe Organ Builder and became a master organ builder. 

Ken came to America in 1952 to work for the Standard Organ Company and he and his wife, Stella became citizens of the United States on May 1, 1964. In 1967, Ken went to work at the Newport News Shipyard where he was a supervisor on submarines, retiring in 1988 after 21 years.

Ken loved his family, his music, and living in Gloucester County.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Stella Roberts; daughter, Denise Roberts Brinker; son, David Owen Roberts; grandson, John Kenneth Brinker; cousin, Peter Roberts of Williamsburg, and many nieces and nephews in Ireland, Wales and England.

The family will have a memorial service at a later date.

In Ken’s memory, the family desires contributions be made to the Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue, P.O. Box 9, Bena, Va. 23018.
