KATHERINE M. LEWIS

Katherine Elizabeth Miles Lewis, age 94, passed away on Friday, July 8, 2011, at Retreat Hospital in Richmond, Va., after a brief illness.

Mrs. Lewis was born in Mathews County, on Jan. 4, 1917, and was the daughter of Captain John H. Miles Jr. and Anne Campbell Green Miles. Mrs. Lewis attended public school in Mathews County, graduating from Mathews High School. She then attended and graduated from Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, Va.

After college, Mrs. Lewis embarked upon her career as an elementary school teacher, teaching in Mathews County, Chesterfield County, Rockbridge County and Halifax County. After her retirement, she moved to her family home on the East River in Mathews County, and continued her interest in education. She was an avid reader, reading at least one new book every week up to the time of her death, and always enjoyed visiting with her family and many friends.

Mrs. Lewis was a member of the Bermuda Hundred Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and of the Westville Christian Church, Mathews.

She was predeceased by her husband of many years, Clifton L. Lewis. She is survived by her nephew, S. Miles Dumville, his wife, Stephanie, and their son, Miles A. S. Dumville of Richmond and Charlottesville, Va., and her nephew, William P. Miles, his wife, Eva, and their children, Joey and Anna Miles, of Ashburn, Va.

Funeral services were held at the Foster-Faulkner Funeral Home, Mathews, at noon on Wednesday, July 13, 2011. Friends were invited to visit at the funeral home the preceding evening from 6-8. Burial followed the service at the Green Family Cemetery in Mathews.
