Following last Thursday night’s victory over Middlesex, the Mathews High School JV girls’ basketball team is now 3-0 in Conference 42 play.
The Lady Devils came back from their largest deficit this season after a slow start in the first half to pull out a 32-31 victory.
Taking advantage of two injured Lady Chargers, Mathews stepped up its defensive game, closing the 14-point fourth quarter lead Middlesex had. In the closing minutes, Mathews finally was able to capitalize on its aggressive full-court press to force turnovers and convert them into easy layups.
Lexie Miles, Katherine Respess and Casey Kelly totaled a score of 17 points between the three of them in the fourth quarter to rally for the win. Kelly led the team with points with 13. Miles and Respess followed behind having nine and seven points, respectively. Emily Carmine and Yolanda Fells each added two points.
