JV Lady Devils place second in Christmas Tournament

The Mathews High School junior varsity girls’ basketball team advanced all the way to the championship game in the West Point JV Christmas Tournament last week before falling to Surry.

Along the way, Mathews defeated King William and West Point by scores of 23-13 and 27-14, respectively. The tournament was held last Wednesday and Thursday.

In the King William game, Stacie Thomas and Skyller Worley led Mathews with six points each. Connie Johnson (five points), Isabella Hudgins (four) and Jade Davis (two points) rounded out the scoring for the Lady Devils.

Davis had the hot hand for Mathews in the next game, scoring a dozen points. Also contributing to the win were Worley (five points), Johnson (four), Abigail Hudgins (three), Kelsey Ryan (two) and Thomas, who made one foul shot. The championship game was a tough loss, 42-22.
