JV Lady Devils off to 2-1 start

The Mathews High School junior varsity softball team is off to a 2-1 start.

The jayvees opened on the road at Essex on March 17. Mathews easily won the game, 12-1, in a shortened five innings due to the mercy rule. Three Mathews pitchers combined for a no-hitter in which only two batters reached base on walks. Taylor Locey pitched the first three innings, striking out three while allowing one walk. Justice Parlett pitched the fourth inning, striking out one and walking one. Vallin Jenkins pitched the fifth, striking out one with no walks. Offensive standouts for Mathews were Sarah Brown (1-for-1, single, RBI), Ashley Foster (3-for-4, two singles, double, four RBIs), and Caroline Crittenden (2-for-4, two singles, 2 RBIs). Hallie Duncan added a single and a RBI, while Madisyn Jackson and Shayla Wheeler each singled.
