JV Lady Devils beat Tabb, Windsor

It’s been a busy week for the Mathews High School junior varsity softball team. The Lady Devils went 2-1 in recent action, with a loss to Rappahannock, and wins over Tabb and Windsor.

Last Wednesday, the MHS JV girls fell to Rappahannock, 6-0. It was a much closer contest than the final score would indicate; three crucial errors were responsible for four unearned runs. Facing the best pitcher the Lady Devils have seen this season, the Mathews offense could only come up with two hits, one each for Abbie Hudgins and Chesapeake West. Vallin Jenkins pitched a strong complete game against this tough opponent.

Thursday’s game against Tabb provided a much different outcome. After pitching 16 innings in the previous three days, coach J.J. Ashberry asked Jenkins if she was ready to go. “She smiled, stuck her glove out and I gave her the ball … (and) she gave us another great performance from the circle,” Ashberry said.

In six innings, she gave up only three ear...
